Boldenone Undecylenate is an anabolic androgenic steroid derived from testosterone. Most people know it by the name Equipoise, a brand introduced by Squibb in the 1970s. Although it’s widely recognized today as a veterinary steroid, Boldenone actually appeared earlier in human medicine. In the 1950s, Ciba released it under the name Parenabol. It saw moderate medical use through the 1960s and 70s before being discontinued for human treatment. Since then, Boldenone has remained primarily a veterinary compound, with Equipoise becoming the dominant name on the market. The brand is currently owned by Fort Dodge Animal Health.

For years, many assumed Equipoise was similar to Deca Durabolin (Nandrolone Decanoate). That comparison largely came from early commentary within the bodybuilding community. In reality, the two compounds are structurally and functionally different. Nandrolone carries strong progestogenic activity, while Boldenone does not. If Boldenone resembles anything, it is testosterone, though it has its own distinct profile.

How Equipoise Works

Equipoise is essentially testosterone with a slight structural modification. A double bond between carbon one and two reduces both its androgenic strength and its tendency to convert to estrogen. It is attached to the long undecylenate ester, which slows the hormone’s release once injected. Blood levels typically peak several days after administration and then decline gradually over a few weeks.

Because of its altered structure, Boldenone converts to estrogen at roughly half the rate of testosterone. Estrogen-related side effects can occur, but they are generally milder compared to testosterone. While it does not produce mass gains on the same level as testosterone, its lower estrogen activity often results in steadier, leaner progress.

Like most anabolic steroids, Equipoise enhances protein synthesis, improves nitrogen retention, supports IGF-1 production, and may inhibit glucocorticoid hormones. It is also known for increasing red blood cell count. Moderate increases can support endurance and overall performance, though extremely high doses over extended periods may raise concerns.

Effects of Equipoise

Boldenone is typically considered a steady and manageable compound. In medical settings decades ago, it was used for conditions such as muscle wasting and osteoporosis. In veterinary medicine, especially with horses, it has been used to promote lean weight gain and stimulate appetite.

In performance settings, appetite stimulation is commonly reported, though not everyone experiences it. For individuals who struggle to consume enough calories during a bulking phase, this can be helpful. While it can contribute to lean muscle growth, gains tend to develop gradually. It does not produce the rapid size increases seen with stronger mass builders, but it often results in more controlled, quality gains with less water retention.

Strength improvements are another commonly noted effect. Increased strength can support both muscle growth and athletic performance. Additionally, users often report improved muscular endurance and recovery.

Equipoise is also used during cutting phases. In a calorie deficit, maintaining muscle becomes challenging. Boldenone can help preserve lean tissue while dieting and may contribute to a harder, more conditioned look. However, because it does carry some estrogen conversion, it is sometimes reduced or discontinued later in strict contest preparation phases.

Potential Side Effects

Estrogenic Effects


Although Boldenone converts to estrogen at a lower rate than testosterone, elevated estrogen levels are still possible. This may lead to water retention, increased blood pressure, or gynecomastia in sensitive individuals. Many users manage these risks with careful dosing. In some cases, anti-estrogen medications such as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) or aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are used. AIs are more potent in reducing estrogen levels but may negatively affect cholesterol. SERMs are milder and may be sufficient for many individuals.

Androgenic Effects


Possible androgen-related effects include acne, increased body hair growth, and hair thinning in those genetically predisposed. Boldenone converts to dihydroboldenone through the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, but this activity appears limited in humans. Medications like finasteride do not significantly reduce Boldenone’s androgenic impact. Women who use anabolic steroids face a risk of virilization, including voice deepening and other masculine traits. If symptoms appear, discontinuation is essential to prevent permanent changes.

Cardiovascular Health
